Built in 1875 at a cost of $14,000, this structure was the original Beaverhead County Courthouse. After a close and venomous election in 1881, the Beaverhead County seat was ultimately moved to the more populous agriculture and freight-transporting center of Dillon.
Bannack was founded in 1862 and named for the local Bannock Indian tribe. It briefly served as the capital city of the newly created Montana Territory in 1864, until the capital was moved to Virginia City. The last residents of the community moved out in the 1970s. The site of the town is today Bannack State Park and National Historic Landmark.
