This structure was originally built in 1926 in Classical Revival style. It was dramatically remodeled in 1964, resulting in this appearance. In 2001, it was replaced by the current Bernalillo County Courthouse. As of 2001 this building is the Bernalillo County Annex.

This 1969 courthouse was designed by the firm of Kruger, Lake & Henderson. It certainly was not my inspiration when I set out to visit every county courthouse in the nation.

The seat of this county however is located in a very beautiful area of the state. It was named for its location on land reserved in the Gila National Forest. It is one of only a few seats in the nation actually located within a national forest. The county is not pronounced like the town of Raton, New Mexico (which is pronounced ra-TONE); it is pronounced CAT-ruhn.
