Designed in Greek Revival style by architect Barachias Holt, this lovely state capitol was erected on Montgomery's Goat Hill in 1851. It is positioned at the end of Dexter Avenue. In 1861 from February to May it was used as the first national capitol for the Confederate States of America. Additions to the original 1851 structure were made in 1885, 1906, 1911, and 1992. It is one of the most striking state capitols in the American Southeast.
Past capitals of Alabama have been located at Saint Stephens (1817-18), Huntsville (1819-1820), Cahaba (1820-26), Tuscaloosa (1826-46), and Montgomery (from 1846 to the present).
