The Ames Monument, or Ames Pyramid, was completed in 1882 at the direction of the Union Pacific Railroad. It honors brothers Oakes and Oliver Ames, who contributed to that company's rail line through this area in the 19th century. The monument was designed by celebrated architect Henry Hobson Richardson. It is located near the highest elevation of the Union Pacific's transcontinental line at 8,247 feet above sea level. The monument was largely forgotten in the 20th century, but can be easily accessed by taking a well-marked unpaved road from Interstate 80 in southeastern Albany County near the Vedauwoo site in the Medicine Bow National Forest.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016.
