This handsome late '30s Art Deco building was designed by architect Angus V. McIver. The firm of Lease and Leigland was responsible for its construction in 1938.

It looks rather similar to the county courthouses in nearby Cut Bank and Shelby. Angus McIver designed both of those structures as well around the same time period during the Great Depression.

Pondera County's name is pronounced pahn-der-AY, just like Ponderay, Idaho and Pend Oreille County, Washington.

Unfortunately I arrived in Jordan after hours, so I was not able to go inside to look for a construction date. However, the cleaning staff were still here and they remembered it was first built as a hospital built before the 1950s. I'm not sure about that estimated time frame, because it looks like a 1960s building, a not so great 1960s building.

Jordan, with 364 residents, is the county seat of Garfield County which has 1,184 residents and 4,668 square miles.

Following the passage of a $40,000 bond issue by the electors of Teton County in 1905, the construction firm of Lease and Richards of Great Falls erected this gem of civic architecture in the following year. The architectural team of Joseph Gibson and George Shanley of Kalispell designed the imposing Romanesque Revival capitol, which is situated in the middle of a traffic circle in the middle of Main Street.

This courthouse was built in 1955. The front sign with the brick design showing a map of the county is my favorite part of it.

The people that work in this courthouse were so nice. We tried to find the name of the architect back in there vault, but we just couldn't find anything. I though that it was so kind of them to take the time to look, though.

Hysham is located just to the north of Interstate 94 between Billings and Forsyth.
