Built in 1954-55, this mid-century modern courthouse was designed by Michigan architect Ralph S. Gerganoff.
Alcona County is located in the northeast of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, on the shores of Lake Huron, just south of Alpena. The name of the county, which is alphabetically first among Michigan's 83 counties, is a neologism from the imagination of influential geography and ethnologist, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft.

This Modern courthouse was built in 1960 and replaced the county's previous Romanesque Revival courthouse that looked similar to the Saint Joseph and Grand Traverse county courthouses. That one was unfortunately destroyed.
I don't know if you have noticed this, but Michigan has a ton of counties with unique names. Enough to put Mississippi to shame. The reason for this condition is that in the 1830s, American geographer, geologist, and ethnologist Henry Rowe Schoolcraft just made a bunch of them up. The name Allegan was one of those names. So there was no Native-American root word for Allegan; it simply came from Henry Schoolcraft's imagination.

Erected in 1934-35, this WPA-funded Depression-Era Art Deco courthouse was designed by architect William H. Kuni of Detroit and built by the Henry C. Webber Construction Company. When built, it was celebrated as the world's "first monolithic building erected in a cold climate" in the winter. It was built using locally produced poured Portland cement, created from local Michigan limestone. The pouring of cement in the wintertime was previously believed to be impossible. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
The structure is quite similar to Kuni's 1932 designs for the Tuscola County Courthouse in Caro, Michigan.
