This small Italianate courthouse on the square was erected in 1878. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
This structure replaced the county’s previous courthouse that was burned by arson. The freedman falsely accused of the crime, named Henry Wells, was lynched on this square. The local tourist board and community boosters have taken this horrendous story, which should give this community nothing but shame, and attempted with some success to attract attention to the town of Carrollton by claiming that Wells’ ghost haunts this building. His face is supposedly visible in the topmost north-facing window.
