Elaine, Arkansas is a small Delta town located in southern Phillips County between the White and Mississippi rivers.
The community is remembered by historians as the site of one of the nation's deadliest white-supremacist-motivated racial massacres. In 1919, impoverished African American sharecroppers, many of whom resided on the cotton plantations of southern Phillips County where their ancestors had been enslaved, attempted to form a planters labor union. In the autumn of that year, hundreds of Black men and women, many of whom where not associated with the unionization effort, were hunted, tortured, and murdered in what many believe to be the largest mass lynching event in the United States (reminiscent to the massacres in Forsyth County, Georgia in 1912 and Greenwood, Tulsa County, Oklahoma in 1921).
