The charming Appling County Courthouse in Baxley is one of my favorites in the Empire State of the South. It was designed by H. L. Lewman and was built in 1907.

The structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

J.W. Golucke, a renowned Southern courthouse architect, designed this former courthouse built in 1900. It is located in a part of Newton that is very near the Flint River. That river has a habit of flooding, which resulted in damages to this fine old structure in 1924, 1929, and 1994. Following the last flood, this building was replaced by a vacated school building on a bit higher ground. Today this structure is used as the local library.

The edifice was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

This courthouse was originally built as the Newton school house. It was converted into a courthouse following the flooding of the Flint River in 1994 that damaged the county's previous courthouse built in 1900. That old courthouse still stands as the local public library.
