Vernon is located in northwestern Alabama near the Mississippi state line. It is the county seat of Lamar County.

This courthouse was originally built in 1909 as a Classical Revival structure. It was even initially designed by the prolific courthouse-designing firm of Walter Chamberlin and Company. Yet, in 1948 it was greatly remodeled under the supervision of architect William Rosamond.
