Los Banos, derived from Los Baños, which is Spanish for the baths, is located in western Merced County to the southwest of Merced in the Central Valley. The community was named for the hot springs of the San Joaquin River.

The old Snelling Courthouse in the northeastern Merced County community of Snelling was erected on the community square in 1857. It served its county until the 1870s when the county seat was relocated to the Central Valley farming town of Merced.

The historic Merced County Courthouse, on the square in beautiful Merced, California was built in 1875 using the designs of Albert A. Bennett.

The structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
