The lovely wood-frame Mariposa County Courthouse in the charming Sierra Nevada village of Mariposa was built in 1854. Perrin Fox and A. F. Shriver designed the structure in the 1850s, but the clock tower wasn't added until 1866.
The building is the oldest acting courthouse in California, as well as the oldest acting courthouse west of the Rockies. It can also be classified as one of the oldest functioning courthouses in the U.S. west of the Mississippi River; however, it is not the very oldest. There are a few in Arkansas and Iowa that are more senior than this.
In 1977, this structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
