California’s third capital building in the small suburban San Francisco town of Benicia is located in southern Solano County, east of Vallejo and north of Martinez. This is where the California State Legislature convened from February 3, 1853 to February 24, 1854. It is the only pre-Sacramento capitol that survives. The building and the surrounding grounds are a part of Benicia Capitol State Historic Park. This Greek Revival facility was built in 1852, and California became a state on September 9, 1850.

The structure was used as the Solano County Courthouse from 1854 to 1860, when the county seat was relocated to Fairfield. It was designed by L. A. Rider and J. Franklin Houghton, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
