Built during the Great Depression in 1936, this courthouse was intended to replicate the county's earlier 1846 courthouse, which was destroyed by a fire in 1869. This one was designed by architect Alfred Olivia Saint Jean and was constructed by the WPA.

This Colonial Revival structure is a contributing property to the Downtown Bennington Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and expanded in 2008.

Bennington County is special in the Green Mountain State in that it has two county seats. The other seat in this county is the town of Manchester.

This former U.S. Courthouse and Post Office was completed in 1859 using the designs of supervising architect Ammi B. Young. The U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont met here until 1933, and the U.S. Circuit Court for the District of Vermont met here until that court was abolished in 1912. The building temporarily housed the Rutland County courts from 1868 to 1871. It was replaced by a newer Depression Era Federal Building in 1933 and now houses the Rutland Free Library.

This building is a contributing property to the Rutland Courthouse Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
