Angra do Heroísmo, generally known as Angra, is the largest community on the island of Terceira in the Portuguese autonomous region of the Azores. The population in 2011 was 35,402. The municipal extent of the town encompasses the southern half of Terceira, with the north belonging to Praia da Vitória. Together with Ponta Delgada on São Miguel and Horta on Faial, Angra is one of the three regional capitals of the Azores. Each capital is responsible for one of the three branches of government, and Angra do Heroísmo is the executive capital. The town is also the location of the Azorean bishop.

The community was established in the latter half of the 15th century. Angra served as a place of exile for Almeida Garrett during the Napoleonic Wars. It also served as a refuge for Queen Maria II of Portugal from 1830 to 1833. It was classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1983.

Sete Cidades is a civil parish in the center of the municipality of Ponta Delgada, which essentially encompasses the western half of São Miguel. The community is located in the center of a massive volcanic crater three miles across, which is also referred to as Sete Cidades. The population in 2011 was 793. It is one of the smallest parishes of Ponta Delgada by population, although the largest in area.

Funchal is the largest city, the municipal seat, and the capital of Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira, in the North Atlantic Ocean, just northwest of the continent of Africa. The city has a population of 111,892, making it the sixth largest city in Portugal. Funchal has been the capital of Madeira for more than five centuries. Because of its lovely cultural and historical ambiance, Funchal is one of Portugal's most popular tourist attractions. It is a celebrated destination for New Year's Eve, and is an important Portuguese port of call for transatlantic cruise passages.

The name of the city comes from the Portuguese word funcho (which means fennel in English) and the suffix -al, to denote "a plantation of fennel."

Furnas is a civil parish in the municipality of Povoação on the Island of São Miguel in the Portuguese Azores. The population in 2011 was 1,439. The parish is one of the largest in the island and in the Azores. It is located east of Lagoa and Ponta Delgada, west of Povoação and southeast of Ribeira Grande.

The community is located in the interior of São Miguel and is famous for its location near the hot springs and fumaroles near the Lagoa das Furnas. Meats and vegetables are steamed in the natural thermal vents and are widely available at local restaurants. Furnas is a town of iron-rich warm pools for bathing and verdant gardens.
