Construction of the New York State Capitol began in 1867, and came to an end in 1899. Its blended Richardsonian Romanesque and Renaissance Revival style was designed and developed by four prominent architects: Thomas Fuller, Leopold Eidlitz, Henry Hobson Richardson, and Isaac G. Perry.

The capitol building is part of the Empire State Plaza complex on State Street in Albany's Capitol Park. Housing the New York State Legislature, the building was completed at a cost of US$25 million, making it the most expensive government building of its time. It was individually placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and was later included as a contributing property, when the Lafayette Park Historic District was listed in 1978. The New York State Capitol was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1979.

There is a "wavy" black-and-white pavement segment located in the Empire State Plaza in front of the southwest elevation of the State Capitol. It is obviously influenced by the Portuguese pavement (or calçada portuguesa) seen throughout the Lusophone world. I have been unable to confirm if this design element is a direct homage to New Yorkers of Portuguese or Brazilian heritage. Please comment here if you know.

Albany is a lovely small city located in the Hudson Valley of eastern New York. The municipality is home to just under 100,000 residents, and forms the center of a metropolitan area with a 2020 population of over 1 million. The city is one of the oldest in the region with Dutch colonial roots dating to the 1610s.

Albany became the capital of New York in 1797. In addition to being a political center for the fourth most populous U.S. state, the city is a regional hub for economic, educational, and cultural institutions. It is the county seat of Albany County.
