With a 2011 population of roughly 250,000, Alajuela, Costa Rica is one of the largest cities in its country. It is situated directly northwest of San José and serves as the capital of Alajuela Province. The city is home to Juan Santamaría International Airport, which connects the world to the San José metropolitan area.

Located to the southeast of San José, the town of Cartago is an historic center for Costa Rican culture. It served as the administrative and religious capital of Costa Rica from 1574 to 1824. The community was severely damaged by major earthquakes in 1822, 1841 and 1910.
The town's name is the Spanish version of Carthage.
