Lānaʻi City, Hawaiʻi is a charming small community located in the center, interior of the small apostrophe-shaped island of Lānaʻi. The village, which has a 2020 population of 3,300, was founded as a company town that served the pineapple plantation of entrepreneur James Drummond Dole. Lānaʻi City was Hawaiʻi's first planned community and is still full of small 1920s bungalow-style single-family houses.
For most of the island's colonial and modern-day history, Lānaʻi has been owned and operated by a company or a single individual. As of 2012, the island is 98% owned by Larry Ellison, cofounder and chairman of Oracle Corporation.
