Over a number of years, many ships have been beached at Purton,on the River Severn,to strengthen the nearby canal bank.Obviously, and sadly, with the passing of time, many have eroded and rusted away, leaving oddments here and there.

Looking across the River Severn at Purton,Gloucestershire.
Many old vessels were beached here over the years to shore up the embankment between the river and the nearby Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.
A section of one of the concrete barges can be seen in this view.

Remains of a couple of ships beached at Purton,on the banks of the River Severn.
Many vessels were beached here in the mid-1900s,in an attempt to halt bank erosion between the river and the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal (behind us in the picture).
I believe the two vessels here are "Rockby" (nearest the camera, and beached in 1946) and "Severn Collier (a wooden screw barge beached in 1965,one of the last arrivals).

One of the vessels at the "ship's graveyard",Purton,Gloucestershire. Many ships were beached here in the 1950s,to shore up the land between the River Severn and the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.
Apart from the concrete barges, most of the vessels have suffered the ravages of the years, and are in very poor condition.
