The building which hosts this ornament has an interesting history: From the 13th to the mid-19th century its cellar was used as a meat warehouse and its upper floor as a market hall for meat. After the hygienic circumstances had improved, meat was more and more sold decentrally at butcher stores, so in 1871 the grain exchange (koornbeurs) moved into the building. In the early 20th century, another change of function took place, and it was used as a mushroom nursery. At the beginning of World War II it served as a command center for the Delft air surveillance, which was sequestered by the German occupying forces from 1940. Nowadays it's used by an open fraternity as a gathering point and event location for Delft's youth.
