Little Blue Heron (a.k.a. Blue Heron; Egretta caerulea) - The Orlando Wetlands, Christmas, Florida
Soft and shining, while out dining.
Yowzer! It's the "Blue Crane" (and/or heron).
Even Audubon didn't always get it right!
So don't get embarrassed if you mis-ID a bird,
it's the trying that counts
(and eventually gets you there).

Birds of America Havell Edition plate #CCCVII (307) Blue Crane or Heron
Dah Wife likes to stop by (or should that be "buy") the SPCA Thrift store every day in her comings and goings to see if they have any goodies such as nifty kitchen utensils that they just don't make any more (like a vintage Mouli cheese grater or a Pyrex measuring cup with a real handle) when she spotted a framed and matted 16x24 print of Audubon’s infamous "Blue Crane"! She quickly headed home and asked me if she should buy it, and needless to say I sent her packin' back to the store.
The question of course was whether it was an actual Audubon lithograph or one of the countless thousands of prints made in the thirties. No matter really, because for 30 bucks it would still be pleasant to look at, and it was triple matted in a hundred dollar metal museum style frame so there were 6 ways to win and no way to loose!
So . . .
If you've looked at the above image you already know that this is not a hand water colored lithograph but a cheaper machine printed copy. But it's still the infamous "Blue Crane" that Audubon misidentified all those years ago, so it still comes with a good story regardless of its lineage.
Note: It may be hard to tell from the extreme close-up,
but what Audubon called a Blue Crane is actually a Little Blue Heron.
His other mistake (in my opinion anyway) is that he liked to paint birds life size so when he endevoured to fit a life size Little Blue onto a 24x16 inch piece of paper he had to scrunch it down a bit into what seems to me an unnatural and awkward pose for a Little Blue Heron.
But maybe not so unusual for a "Blue Crane"! LOL

Little Blue Heron (a.k.a. Blue Heron; Egretta caerulea) & Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) - Blackpoint Drive, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida
Going from eye to eye with 2 quick shots,
and then blending them together in PhotoShop
And. exactly the how I saw it as my eye refocused as it went from bird to bird. So, I figure the blend is a more accurate representation of what I saw than what the camera recorded.

Immature Little Blue Heron (a.k.a. Blue Heron; Egretta caerulea) molting into adult plumage - Peacock's Pocket Road, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida
Sorry about that, but I simply couldn't resist the reference to Billy Crystal's Fernando Lamas impersonation from the old
