These birds can turn from standing to flying with a flick of their wings and they would glide over the surface with such ease only with the gentle motion of their large wings. It is such a joy to watch them fly.

Great Blue Heron, Channahon State Park, Channahon, Illinois
When I was about to cross the bridge from downtown Channahon into McKinley Woods, I spotted this Great Blue in a pond near the bridge. I certainly wouldn't want to miss a chance to visit with my old friend. So I turned around and found my way into a parking lot in the state park. This guy was still there waiting for his lunch. I knew he would take off if I got too close, but I couldn't resist. He simply flew to the other side of the pond when I approached to take a closer shot. This is THE shot I managed to get. Hope you like it!
