For more detail of walking the canal see the set description. My key source was www.penninewaterways.co.uk/sankey/sa3.htm
Rather suitable for a redundant canal it ends in what was Safeway's carpark, which was then taken oer by Tesco and now Tesco stands empty, with a new one on the link road.
It is currently (May 2012) a council operated car park, which is free on Sundays. The photo is looking east past Park Inn (used to be Hilton Hotel) and towards the glass museum. The canal did go further – down Canal Street (I didn’t do this bit) and onto the site of the Ravenhead Copper Works. The Canal Street section was infilled in 1898 when Pilkingtons extended their glassworks, and Canal Street follows the route of the canal.

This section of the canal was known as the hotties - and well known to the angling world as the warm water pumped out of the factory into the canal gave the advantage for all year round angling in freezing weather conditions as it never froze over and good conditions for the tropical fish that somehow turned up. However the factory is long closed and so I guess the tropical fish are no more! No 9, Jubilee Cone Building is part of the World of Glass museum www.worldofglass.com

Popular with fishing folk. It is a lovely section and one that I was totally unaware on – we go on holidays to far flung places and yet neglect to explore that which is local.
