I was on the lookout for yellow flowers for my April/May Shootaboot Scavenger hunt entry – but in the end the dandelion and dandelion clock got the honour of the last two entries.

Several short sections of the canal remain attracting both fisher folk and nesting birds. I had gone to the other side of the “canal” to find a discrete spot in the bushes and was treated to the sight of this well hidden nesting swan who was undisturbed by me and continued to house keep the nest.

Some left over bits of canal fittings near Winwick Qauy. Pennine waterways identifies it as being a short distance from Hulme Lock and the remains of Dallam Sluice. So maybe I muddled what was what – where is the GPS when I need it, ah it is with Dennis in Scotland – don’t want him getting lost!

Havannah Flashes are not remains of the canal they are two areas of open water caused by ground subsidence where the nearby Havannah Colliery mined too close to the surface! The canal has been in filled here, and lies between the flashes and the Sankey Brook.
