On 6th September 1993 at 02:02, 6M57, comprising of 15 air-braked ferry wagons was traveling from Dover Town Yard to Willesden Yard hauled by 47288, when due to excessive speed, the locomotive's rear bogie derailed in the tunnel approaching Maidstone East. The locomotive ended up on its side on the track. The derailing wagons demolished the signal gantry at the end of the down platform, and both canopy and covered walkway were also damaged on that side.

Seen later the same day 47288 still on its side awaits rescue from the Stewarts Lane breakdown train. 6th September 1993.
