Sorry for a second image from a previous outing (guess I'll eventually delete the first one). I try to avoid that kind of thing...

...but I have scanning notes that will , no doubt, interest 0.0007 percent of the population. See previous for development notes.

Using Lomography's Digitaliza scanning mask (old style), I couldn't get scans sharp enough out of the Epson V700 to see any form of grain structure, which usually means everything is out of focus. I did find a solution, using Epson Scan software, in case anyone's interested...

-- Scan height on this mask is 1.2mm, but Epson's own holders (which I no longer have) are adjustable from 2.5 to 3.5mm. My results were *very* soft, so I raised the mask by 1.75mm (using US quarters as spacers) to 2.95mm.

-- I switched from "film area guide" to "Film (with film holder" to force use of the higher resolution lens. I didn't think Epson Scan would recognize images from Digitaliza, but it did. Note you won't be able to scan sprocket holes using this option.

-- Film type: B&W Negative
-- 16-bit greyscale
-- 3200 dpi (6400 looked worse)
-- target size "Original"
-- turn off unsharp mask (sharpen yourself in post)

All of this seems to do the trick. Grain right off the bed wasn't 'tack' sharp (it's a flatbed scanner, after all), but definitely readable, and easily sharpenable.

The fun of Rodinal developer is sharp grain. I want some grain, darn it.

The 'pretty clean' Kodak Retina IIIc is ready to go again with an expired roll of Kodak UltraMax. I shoot so lightly it will take me 6 weeks, probably, to finish the roll (unless I get out somewhere interesting).

Wishing all a fine Tuesday.

First experiment with Kodak 2238 (ISO 12) and 'kitchen sink' development. Fortunately my hands didn't forget how to load stainless steel reels. My guestimated development times worked out okay, so I'll try to shoot more next week.

I did the first roll of 24 after 9 exposures because I was in a rush to see negatives. Most of those shots were similar to this, so it wasn't an artistically productive outing. We had fun walking across the pond, though. The ice is nice and thick after a week-long cold snap.

Kodak 2238 at ISO 12. #Rodinal diluted 1:50 at 68f for 13 minutes. I agitated for 15 seconds, then 5 inversions every 90 seconds. On a whim I did a pre-wash and saw the draining water was really dark. So I did a second quick rinse before starting development. I don't know what difference it made. Not for nothing, though, the film base is very clear and virtually colorless. I'll probably keep that pre-wash as part of the process.

I was previously (30 years ago) accustomed to a 'newspaper' process, which meant throw it into developer (and be sort-of careful with that part), then do a recklessly fast fix and rinse. No fancy schmancy extra steps or stop bath. No one cared if the negative lasted 3 months; prints had to be made very quickly.

Some dead tech, or maybe they're just resting.

Fresh scan from an old roll -- had to dig the scanner out from under a laundry pile.

I have a small amount of expired color film to shoot (thank you, BFF), plus a hundred feet of Kodak 2238. I'll let you know how that goes. Getting close to 10 years since I shot film (Charlie was a toddler), and 30 since processing my own B&W. There, I've dated myself.

I hope all are having a fine week. It's been too cold and ugly for me to be out walking around.
