This village lies to the north-west of Carlisle, Cumbria, UK, close to the Solway plain. The historic Sty Mary's church is built on the site of a motte and bailey castle (hence the raised ground), which in turn was built on the site of a Roman fortlet sitting on Hadrian's Wall. Extraordinary historic site showing long-lived continuity of settlement over two millennia.
With thanks to my photographic colleague Brian Irving who has introduced me to many photogenic sites in Cumbria.
