Woolwich ferry Ernest Bevin is seen waiting to unload at the Woolwich landing. The 1963-built vessels will soon be replaced by a pair of Polish built ferries.

Behind the ferry can be seen the massive Tate & Lyle works, whilst to the right is the North Woolwich landing, built by Marples-Ridgeway between 1964 and 66.

This shot comes from my first ever roll of medium format transparency film. I'm very impressed with the quality and sharpness of the Provia 400 film.

The decline of London Docks, as illustrated in a fold-out map published by the Port of London Authorityaround 1967. London Docks (Wapping) are scheduled to close in 1968 and East India Dock has already closed. Containerisation was increasing, moving down river to bigger, deeper mechanised Docks opened by the PLA at Tilbury.

The Pool of London is the name given to the section of the River Thames from London Bridge to Limehouse. It is split into Upper and Lower pools. Upper Pool is from London Bridge to Cherry Garden Pier and Lower Pool to Limehouse. Before the enclosed docks were built, ships had to unload in the Pool, but suffered from thieving.

Looking from the north bank span of Tower Bridge along the 'Upper Pool' towards London Bridge. Royal Navy Light Cruiser C35 HMS Belfast is on her permanent mooring on the south bank. I'm not sure what the vessel moored alongside is. On the north bank is Billingsgate Fish Market, just prior to it's move to Poplar. Tower Pier occupies the foreground, and a pair of mudlarkers can be seen on the muddy riverbank.

The photo was taken by me during a visit to London on my 9th birthday, 1st June, 1982. My Dad took me to the new London Transport Museum in Covent Garden, and then to Tower Bridge.

Note how many taller buildings have been built since, notably the 'Walky Talkie' and 'The Shard'.

A Cravens two-car DMU is seen approaching Silvertown station, running alongside the Tate & Lyle sugar refinery. The DMU has left North Woolwich, possibly running as an empty stock working (the destination screen reads 'Depot'). Crossrail work has changed the look of the area, with a high concrete wall alongside Albert Road (to the left of the train).

A smartly turned out Cravens class 105 DMU calls at the rebuilt Silvertown station with a North Woolwich - Stratford Low Level service. Tate & Lyle sugar refinery is on the right.

Today, the trackbed of this line is being prepared to form part of Crossrail, which will use the original Connaught Tunnel. Crossrail will not have a station at Silvertown; the area already being well served by the DLR.

June, 1983.
