Glen Etive Mor Waterfall, Glencoe, Scotland

I’m returning to my first full day in Glencoe when the whole place looked like something out of a winter wonderland movie. After shooting The Cauldron I felt I just had to pop down to this famous ‘honeypot’ location and see what it looked like. As I set off the 100m or so to get to the falls I marvelled in the firm frozen ground I could easily traverse. Normally it’s a quagmire route due to all us Togs and the Insta-selfies (thanks to Dom Haughton for that name😃) but today all was firm under foot.

Arriving at the falls I was amazed twice over. Firstly just how thoroughly they had frozen over and secondly that I had the location to myself…almost unheard of.

As with The Cauldron the ice here presented a big challenge to shoot it low but not either crack the ice or suddenly end up in freezing cold water over the top of my wellies! Like elsewhere in Glencoe some of the self-seeded trees are starting to affect compositions so I tried various placements of the offending vegetation in different compositions. I can’t say I am totally happy with any of them but I knew I could not clone out that one in front of the Buckle well so had to leave it in. The ice looked so delicate that I had to be really careful with resting the tripod on the surface ice of the pool a lot of us drop into to shoot low.

Personally I feel this proves the philosophy of not turning your nose up at honeypot locations. No matter how many times you shoot them conditions can vary and give you a totally different image.
