...well i risked it - and i live :) Just as i stepped out of the door, the sun peeked through for a short moment - that's the only shot i got, before it disappeared again.

Only one shot (Singh Ray 3 Stop Hard Grad ND Filter used to create the contrast between sky and field).

Looks way better on Black

After a strong thunderstorm, the weather became a bit better, but right during sunset, the dark clouds came back.

I just had to cross the road in front of our hotel to capture this scene. If you look closely you can see the tarmac under water, which can be used to unload boats into the water

No HDR - just a graduated ND Filter (3 stops as far as i remember) and of course some processing, but still one shot.

Thanks for the testmonial Ray - i'm flattered!

So, i posted images from every station of my vacation, except Quebec City. Well, i guess i'll have to prepare something for tomorrow :)

Info:

Cape Cod, often referred to as simply the Cape, and called Cape of Keel by early Norse explorers, is a peninsula in the easternmost portion of the state of Massachusetts, in the Northeastern United States. It is coextensive with Barnstable County. Several smaller islands off Cape Cod, including Monomoy Island, Monomoscoy Island, Popponesset Island, and Seconsett Island, are also in Barnstable County, being part of municipalities with land on the Cape. The Cape's small-town character and large beachfront attract heavy tourism during the summer months.

Cape Cod was formed as the terminal moraine of a glacier, resulting in a peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean. In 1914, the Cape Cod Canal was cut through the base or isthmus of the peninsula. It is still identified as a peninsula by geographers, who do not change landform designations based on man-made canal construction.

Unofficially, it is one of the biggest barrier islands in the world, shielding much of the Massachusetts coastline from North Atlantic storm waves. This protection helps to erode the Cape shoreline at the expense of cliffs, while protecting towns from Fairhaven to Marshfield

Road vehicles from the mainland cross over the Cape Cod Canal via the Sagamore Bridge and the Bourne Bridge. The two bridges are parallel, with the Bourne Bridge located slightly farther southwest. In addition, the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge carries railway freight as well as tourist passenger services.

Bass River is an estuary and village in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts, United States. The estuary separates the towns of Yarmouth and Dennis at the central, southern sections of the towns. At its widest and most southerly point, it opens to and meets Nantucket Sound. Its brackish, northwestern end flows into Follins Pond, from there winding further north as a brook, to Mill pond then an underground stream that nearly bisects Cape Cod.

The mouth of the river is between Smugglers Beach on the Yarmouth side and West Dennis Beach on the Dennis side. West Dennis beach has become a popular site for kite boarding in the past few years. In the same way Kalmus Beach in Hyannis has become popular for windsurfing. Once inside the river, there is a large land mass covered with sea grass in the middle of which is a large bay. The island is called 'Marsh Island' by the locals.

Marsh Island separates Bass River into two parts. The right side of the river, which is referred as the 'Old Field Channel' goes towards West Dennis and the Fingers development. The left side is the main channel of the river passing Windmill Beach, Bass River Yacht Club, and Ship Shops Marina. After the marina, the river goes under the Route 28 bridge and winds 5 more miles deep into the cape. Bass River was once considered a viable location for a canal traversing Cape Cod and is the largest river the Mid-Cape Highway spans.

Bass River is home to a friendly rivalry between West Dennis Yacht Club and the Bass River Yacht Club. These clubs also compete against Hyannis Yacht Club, Wianno Yacht Club, and others in the Southern Massachusetts Sailing Association team racing circuit. The Yarmouth shores are home to Bass River Golf Course, which is owned and operated by the town of Yarmouth.

Thunder Storm approaching.

Technique/Processing

To get a sky like this, you have to duplicate your photo, convert the new layer to b/w (should be very contrasty, so that the blues of the sky are black and the clouds are white, without losing detail), set it to soft light blending mode and then apply a layer mask, so that it only has effect on the sky. I'd also recommend dialing down the opacity to ~50%, because the effect can get too strong.

Colors are simple cross processing with Nik CFX. Can also be done with an action like urban acid.
