Last month I saw this article on LAist and thought it was such a cool idea:
laist.com/2010/02/18/100_lifeguard_towers_to_become_publ.php

"Developed initially for seriously ill and physically disabled children... [the] program conceives and develops one-of-a-kind motivational art projects that merge the production of dynamic public art works with creative therapy for hospitalized children and civic education for students of all ages," explains Project of Hope's website.

This project will bring public art to every one of the 155 life guard towers in LA County, along 30 miles of coastline. The panels are painted separately and then affixed to the life guard towers. The display runs from May to October. Afterward, the panels will be sent to Haiti, to decorate hospitals and temporary housing for people displaced by the recent earthquake.

Luckily, the general public has the opportunity to volunteer. My nephew John and I enjoyed the sunshine today while painting, and we're so happy to be a part of the largest public art project currently ongoing in the country.
