"Flamenco Dancers"
Prague, Czech Republic
Submitted By: Julian Hayda
Student Description: This photograph was taken during at a concert during the week-long Khamoro Roma Culture festival in Prague. Attendance at the festival's concerts was mandatory for our class, and was considered as classroom time meant for fieldwork, interacting with the performers and audience. This concert, specifically was a variety concert of traditional Roma music, performed by Roma musicians, as opposed to Roma-styled music played by Gadje (non-Roma) musicians. These two Flamenco dancers were one of the more widely popular acts of the evening, and expressed an authentic form of Roma dance from Spain. Largely considered a form of Spanish folk culture, Flamenco dancing traces its roots through Gitano settlers in Northern Africa and Spain. Flamenco music only entered the Spanish mainstream during Gitano street performances in the late 19th century and gained more widespread popularity through the French-based Gypsy Kings. The word flamenco is derived from the Middle Dutch word Vlamic or Fleming, literally meaning, gypsy-like.
