The first Hudson left the new factory July 8, 1909.A total of 1,100 cars were shipped to dealers between July and December 1909. By July of the following year, 4,000 cars had been sold.
Roy D. Chapin and Howard E. Detroit, formally associated with Chalmers-Detroit and Oldsmobile persuaded Joseph L. Hudson, founder of Hudson Department Stores, to invest $90,000 in the new Hudson. They purchased the factory of the Aero Car Co. and the Seldon patent license of the Northern in January 1909.
The company touted their first cars as; “Strong – Speedy – Roomy – Stylish.” It offered a 20 hp four-cylinder engine, a sliding-gear transmission and a leather-faced cone clutch.
