Old Abbey House

Over the past year, Vale of White Horse District Council has been exploring the potential of the Old Abbey House in Abingdon.

Working with Oxfordshire County Council and other partners, the district council is conducting a ‘one public estate’ review to look at how we can use Old Abbey House alongside other key public buildings and sites in the town.

This wider review assesses the sites and buildings in the town centre and aims to put the most appropriate service inside. This maximises the use of the building or site and the service being provided, which then benefits local people.

Whilst the review has been ongoing, Old Abbey House has been subjected to vandalism on several occasions. The district council has been working with the police and a private security company, who have been patrolling the area, however, the building has continued to be damaged and windows smashed.

The council has been advised, by its insurance provider and risk officer, to put temporary metal shutters on the doors and windows at Old Abbey House to minimise any further internal damage or potential injury to those entering the building. From 25-29 October, the work will be carried out on the building and the car park will be closed during this time.

Cabinet member, Michael Murray, said: “It’s very important we take time to explore all options for Old Abbey House to make the best use of this building, so it’s a real shame that while we’re doing so irresponsible individuals have resorted to petty vandalism. Nobody wants to see shutters on a building in this historical setting, but we’ve been forced into this situation.”

The boarding is a temporary measure while the council continue to review Abingdon’s key sites and services in the town and review opportunities for future development or refurbishment of Old Abbey House.
