Image Description: |
Lesser Black-backed Gull flying over Lake Erie. At 23 inches, slightly smaller than the Herring GUll. The adult has yellow legs, dark slate-gray back and wings. The immatures of this species and Herring Gulls are very similar and hard to tell apart. They inhabit nearly all types of open country - coasts, islands, fields, lakes, airports, garbage dumps among other places. Although they breed in northern Europe they are an uncommon but increasingly regular visitor to eastern North America but rarer inland and in the West. They can be found in and around larger cities not only along the east coast of the United States but also in the Great Lakes region. Lake Erie Metropark, Monroe County, Michigan. |
