Common Snipe.

A long-billed, 10 1/2 inch long brownish shorebird with a striped head and back, white belly, and rust in the tail. Usually seen when flushed from the edge of a marsh or a pond. Their flight is fast and erratic.

They inhabit freshwater marshes, ponds, flooded meadows and fields and rarely in salt marshes.

They range from northern Alaska and Canada south to California, the southwestern US and New Jersey. They winter across much of the United States north to British Columbia and Virginia. They are also in the Old World.
