58 to 60 inches in length with a wingspan of just under 8 feet. The adults are all white with an orange bill with a black knob at the base. The young birds are the same but dingy gray-brown becoming whiter with age. The Mute Swan holds its neck in a feaceful curve while native swans hold thei rnecks straight up. They inhabit ponds, rivers, coastal lagoons and bays. Not native to North America, they were introduced from Europe into the northeastern United States. Resident and most common in Southern New England, southeastern New York, New Jersey and Maryland. They are also locally established in Michigan. Kensington Metropark, Livingston County, Michigan. |
