Northern Shoveler.

Between 17 and 20 inches in length the Northern Shoveler is distinguished by a lare shovel-shaped bill. The male has a green head, white body and chestnut colored flanks. The female is mottled brown with pale blue shoulder patches; similar to a female Blue-winged Teal but with a much larger bill.

They inhabit marshes and prairie potholes.

They range from Alaska east to northern Manitoba and south to California and the Great Lakes region. They winter from Oregon across the southern half of the United States to the Gulf Coast and north to New Jersey.

Kensington Metropark, Livingston County, Michigan.
