Last weekend we experienced a strong geomagnetic storm from the Sun, resulting in aurora borealis visible even in the Silicon Valley, which is at the latitude of Sicily in southern Italy. The sun is still very active a few days later. Today I grabbed my long lens and solar filter to see. Many sunspots are visible, more than usual. Sunspots are temporary spots on the Sun's surface that are darker than the surrounding area. They are regions of reduced surface temperature caused by concentrations of magnetic flux that inhibit convection. We are now almost at the peak of a 11 year solar cycle. The max will be next year, so we will see more activity. Hopefully we will not experience a Carrington Event again, which was the biggest geomagnetic storm in recorded history, peaking in September 1859. If it were to happen today it would destroy satellites, power transmission lines, and electronics on Earth.

I processed a soft HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.
