Julio Antonio Mella (1903-1929) was a Cuban Marxist revolutionary and iconic inspiration of the Revolution of 1959. Exiled to Mexico under the Machado regime, he was murdered under mysterious circumstances one night while walking home with the silent movie actress, photographer, and revolutionary muse, Tina Modotti. Having fallen out of favour with the Mexican government, she was implicated by the police in his probable assassination. These photographs of Mella's life, along with his nearby bust serve as a monument in Avenida San Lázaro, near the University of Havana
