A mother leopard stares while her cub plays on the ground below. Her glance alone is enough to know that she means business. Although leopards are the smallest of the big cats of Africa, they are formidable opponents. They are also the best climbers of the big cat species. Their strength is demonstrated by their ability to carry a kill high up into a tree, protecting it from other animals that might try to steal it. Unlike lions and more like cheetahs, leopards lead a solitary life. Time together is limited to the first two years after birth.
