Zonnehof Pavilion Amersfoort, NL – architect Gerrit Rietveld - 1959
From the first plans the project Zonnehof was controversial. The socialist mayor Molendijk asked architect Gerrit Rietveld to design an exhibition pavilion for contemporary art. He hoped to stimulate art and culture in Amersfoort and make it accessible to a broad audience. But he met with resistance because of the progressive architecture and finance. Eventually the building was realized in the park of the 19th-century villa The Zonnehof. The building was opened in 1959, the year of the Centenary (700 years Amersfoort). The square pavilion is rather sober, doing justice to the material, brickwork and glass. The sizing is based on a grid of 3 x 3 m: the walls are 18 m wide and 6 m high. Inside is a half-storey, height 3 m installed. Daylight from the panes of glass above and from the side makes the building ideal for exhibitions.
