After the Ronald McDonald House that Hundertwasser designed for the German city of Essen was so well received, the Ronald McDonald Kinderfonds in De Bilt NL approached the Hundertwasser Foundation in Vienna, asking whether it would also be possible to have a house designed according to Hundertwasser's principles, for the families of children with handicaps and serious medical conditions, in the south of the Netherlands. The New Zealand Spiral Monument, designed by Hundertwasser in 1987/88 and planned by architect Peter Pelikan was used as a model for this project. The Rainbow Spiral of Valkenburg is the only Hundertwasser architectural project in the Netherlands.
