The Zaanse Schans is one of the highlights of the Netherlands, just outside Amsterdam in Zaandijk. Be part of a vibrant and stunning living and working community that dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries. At the time, the surrounding Zaan region was an important industrial area and hundreds of windmills there helped produce linseed oil, paint, snuff, mustard, paper and other products. In the Zaanse Schans you find wooden wind mills, barns, houses and museums and built in the typically Dutch wooden architectural style, relocated here piece by piece since 1961. Watch traditional crafts such as clog- and cheese making or visit the windmills and traditional buildings.
The wind mills were built after 1574. You see:
De Huisman (The Houseman), a mustardmill
De Gekroonde Poelenburg (The Crowned Poelenburg), a sawmill
De Kat (The Cat), a dyemill
Het Jonge Schaap (The Young Sheep), a sawmill
De Os (The Ox), an oilmill
De Zoeker (The Seeker), an oilmill
Het Klaverblad (The Cloverleaf), a sawmill
De Bonte Hen (The Spotted Hen), an oilmill

Juliana bridge Zaanstad - Design: Royal Haskoning DHV architects; project architect: Joris Smits. 2009-2011.
A stripe across the water - Of all bridges across the Zaan the Juliana Bridge has the prettiest setting. A bridge with too much presence would be inappropriate here. The architects chose for a subtle bridge that blends in with the historical surroundings. The new Juliana Bridge sheers fluently and low across the water. The deck is divided through the middle in two parts, bestowing a transparent look upon the bridge. The elegant V-shaped pylons are positioned behind the edge of the deck, thus giving the bridge a horizontal composition. The fact that this is a moving bridge is hardly visible because all the machinery that operates the moving part of the deck is hidden inside a pylon. For these reasons the Juliana Bridge manifests itself as a stripe across the water.
