We were walking through a tropical forest on the flanks of the Arenal Volcano. My daughter spotted this one before I did. I need to take her birding with me more often.
Motmots are one of my favorite birds. They are a sit and wait predator handing out very quietly waiting for a bug to get a little too close.

A bird found throughout much of Costa Rica. Most of it's energy comes from using its long bill to probe flowers for nectar.

The Blue-gray Tanager seems to be everywhere in Costa Rica. It is probably this species that got me started as a birder. I saw it there about 15 years ago. It's not as striking as some of the more colorful Costa Rican birds, but it has a subtle beauty that really catches the eye.
