For the 52 in 2017 group. Week #4 "What's In Your Neighborhood"
"Our fourth week's challenge is to take a photograph of a person, place, or object in your neighborhood that represents where you live. We want to know something about you by what is in your environment".
Not an easy one for me. I live in a tiny village surrounded by farmland, but with very few amenities or meeting places. So the everyday things like going shopping mean quite a drive to a nearby town. So my 'neighbourhood' can be the hillside over the road, or the town 20 miles away! When we go shopping I tend to take my camera with me - and shoot the road, the landscape and the skies as we drive along. I call them my 'drive-bys'. So it seemed appropriate to catch the flavour of our regular shopping trip.
The road is icy, the temperature outside the car is close to freezing. The winter sun is low in the sky and almost blinding as it shines on the road. I often try to capture this tree as we approach the bend - and most often I fail. But this morning I got lucky. This is the essence of my neighbourhood in winter - my supermarket trip!

For the Smile on Saturday challenge "meadows and fields"
HSoS !!
The barley field beyond our garden - a sea of barley - just beginning to get its golden colour as it ripens.
We don't have meadows round here, all the land is in use for grazing Aberdeen Angus cattle or sheep, and primarily for growing barley for the Scotch Whisky industry. Computerised tractors mean that they plough ever closer to the boundary fences and hedges, leaving no room for the wild plants and hedgerows that used to support so many butterflies and birds. It's sad that the meadows and hedgerows I loved and played in as a child are now largely only a memory!
So we grow as many wild and insect friendly plants as we can in our garden, and try to keep an informal 'hedgerow' between us and the barley field. Shot here after a welcome shower of rain, when the sun came out and the world sparkled ;o)

High summer at Fyvie Castle. The steps up to the loch-side walk. Despite the long, hot, dry summer there was still plenty of cool shade here.
HFF! And have a great weekend ;o)
I got some new Infrared kit this summer, to extend the range of what I can capture. I use converted cameras rather than placing filters over the lens. This was the first outing for the small, light Sony a5000 with the 850nm filter. I attached a 200mm telephoto lens and shot as we walked round the small loch. The a5000 has no inbuilt EVF which makes it difficult to see what you're shooting in bright sunlight ...so it was a bit hit and miss!
Other news - I managed to rescue all the data from my 'access denied'portable hard drive. Huge relief! It took days using an old XP laptop. I always used to keep data in several places. An old hand told me years ago "if it's not in 3 places it doesn't exist" and that was wise advice. I guess I've become lazy as the photo store has grown so big, and solid state disks have become more reliable. But I guess tech can always crash and burn .... the recent banking IT problems should have alerted me ;o)
Anyway I am happily looking through the store that, like Topsy, just grows and grows! I keep promising to thin it all out ... but somehow the joys of going out and shooting some more always wins out!
But this weekend I plan to catch up with you all, and see what lovely photos I've missed this week ... a real treat for me!

Seen through the infrared camera, then processed in Photoshop.
Shot using my IR-converted Nikon D80 with the 590nm Super Goldie filter.
Usually this filter produces a golden sky, and blue-tinted trees ... but using Photoshop you can produce other 'faux' colour results. This is my second attempt at changing the colours this way. (there's a link to my first in the first comment field)

About the IR filter
"The Super Color IR filter is our most colorful filter, its 50% pass frequency is 590nm and its closest equivalent would be the Wratten 29 filter. This filter passes the most visible red light along with IR and therefore the resulting images have the most saturated colors. Which can further be manipulated in Photoshop to produce a dizzying array of effects."

A field of barley, blowing in the wind. More colourful than the December field - and warmer too!
