Nike was an ancient Greek goddess personifying victory. The Nike of Paionios is a statue made by sculptor Paionios in 425–420 BCE. Made of Parian marble, the statue was restored from many fragments. It also had wings. The goddess is shown landing gently on her left foot, with the drapery blown against her body. The statue was excavated at Olympia in 1875–76 and originally stood near the temple of Zeus on a triangular 6-metre high pillar. Including the pillar, the statue was 12 metres high. (Wikipedia). Athletes would pass the goddess as they proceeded to the stadium.

Archaeological Museum, Ancient Olympia

Attributed to Praxiteles by Pausanias, but the truth of this is doubtful. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermes_and_the_Infant_Dionysus

The Heraion at Olympia, located in the north of the sacred precinct, the Altis, is one of the earliest Doric temples in Greece (built ca. 590 BCE), and the oldest peripteral temple at that site, having a single row of columns on all sides. (Wikipedia)

The temple was the very model of the fully developed classical Greek temple of the Doric order. Construction of the temple began around 470 BCE and was estimated to have been completed in 457 BCE. In CE 426, Theodosius II ordered the destruction of the sanctuary during the Persecution of pagans in the late Roman Empire. Earthquakes in 522 and 551 devastated the ruins and left the Temple of Zeus partially buried.

The site of the ancient sanctuary was identified in 1766. In 1829 a French team partially excavated the Temple of Zeus, taking several fragments of the pediments to the Musée du Louvre. Systematic excavation began in 1875, under the direction of the German Archaeological Institute, and has continued, with some interruptions, to the present time. (Text from Wikipedia)
