It could have lasted "only" a few months, yet Syria has gotten deeper and deeper into war for the past three years. It is in some large nations' best interest that the country remain at war.
The Kurds who live in the farthest north-east corner of Syria, at the borders of Turkey and Iraq, have now taken over their region. But the situation remains uncertain mainly as 80% of Syrian oil is found in the area. Thousands of them have fled towards neighboring Iraqi Kurdistan, others prefer to stay and fly the Kurdish flag. It is important to remember that during the last fifty years of dictatorship, under the Assads' rule (father and son), the Kurds' existence itself was denied.
I followed Karim K., a Syrian Kurd, from Paris, through Turkey, into Iraqi Kurdistan, and unto his native town. It was the first time he met his family for the last five years.
