Male dippers are marginally larger than females, though this is not always apparent in the field, even when the pair are together. Both male and female sing though the female has almost given up by early March except during courtship. Then the male displays before the female, dipping, wing-shivering, blinking and giving a distinctive sharp rattling call, quite unlike his usual call-note.
