A winter photo, it always leaves the question in my mind - how did it grow like that.

When I tell Americans I went to White mountains of California to photograph these, I get a blank stare as most have only heard of New Mtns in New Hampshire. So this is @ 10,000ft east of the Sierras seen in distance & across the 395. The pines are currently the oldest living things on the planet with many 4-5000 yrs old. This one is dead but some look just as dead with a little bit of live branch. Well worth a hike up there but I could only do the Discovery trail as the other trail was still closed in june for snow!

Styphnolobium japonicum, native of China but original imports came via Japan hence the name. This one planted in 1762 & one of the 5 trees remaining from the original Arboretum
